Write It Down!
Do you want to become a better artist?
WRITE STUFF DOWN!
Write down your ideas, write down your goals, write down your accomplishments, write down your failures, and write down your progress. Write it ALL down!
And just like those cheesy sales pitches say, "But wait, there's more!"
Writing it down is just the first step. Now, you need to take time to reflect on what you've written down. How do you feel about that idea? What drew you to it? Why is that your goal? Is it a short-term, mid-term, or long-term goal? Can you connect the stair steps to your ultimate goal? What made that piece a success in YOUR eyes? What made it a success in another's eyes? What made it a failure in your eyes? Do other people see it the same? Where are you at on your stairsteps of goals? Has your path changed?
This is why I encourage all Beyond the Brushes members to keep an art journal. This is why goals and accountability meetings are so important. However, you don't need a group to accomplish that.
Yes, having a group of like-minded artists helps A TON! But ultimately, what you need is the discipline and self-awareness to evaluate yourself objectively and subjectively.
It will be hard at first, but as you get your feet wet, it will get easier and easier. Then, you'll be able to use your art journal just like a map, and your path will be made clear.
