Ever had a defiant dog? The kind that just seems untrainable (or like it is trying to train you)? My brain feels this way sometimes, especially as I have gotten more experienced (cough, cough - older). 😅
"You can't teach an old dog new tricks," right? Eh, maybe you're just not teaching that dog in the right way.
Play is an important aspect of learning, and though we recognize that for children, we seem to lack the ability to translate that ever-so, pertinent information into adulthood. Why? Because there is a stigma revolving around adult learning. We think games are for kids, and adults should be able to sit through hours of lectures and meetings and talk, talk, talk.
Let me tell you the truth. That ain't happening!
The average adult human has a short attention span and when they hit the retirement years? Usually that attention span begins to DECLINE! So, what does that have to do with play?
Well, play actually has several benefits regarding adult health and brain function. People who have suffered traumatic brain injuries have been "prescribed" playing cards and board games to help improve brain function and memory. Play also boosts creativity, reduces stress, improves relationships, and so much more.
So, why are we racking our brains trying to force them to learn in the exact opposite of how they were made to learn?
With the holidays around the corner and a new year of goals in store, it sounds like a healthy dose of play should be on all of your lists.
