Painted Connections
“I don't say everything, but I paint everything.” -Pablo Picasso
Did you know humans are capable of complex emotional experiences?
I know this doesn't always seem the case. 😅 But, we can feel completely different emotions AT THE SAME TIME!
Isn't that crazy?
So, how does this relate to painting? Well, have you ever looked at a painting that left you with mixed emotions? Or one that you thought the artist felt or meant one thing and the person next to you thought it was something else? Or even one where every time you come back to it you have a different interpretation?
We tend to gravitate and pick up on the emotion closer to how we are feeling at the time because, in that moment, we are better able to empathize with that emotion the artist is expressing.
The flip side of that (the inability to empathize with the emotion) is called the empathy gap. We have to experience in some form or fashion what the artist did emotionally in order to fully appreciate the painting.
That may be discouraging to some, but think of it this way - because of your own complex emotional experiences, you have the capacity to touch each viewer in a slightly different way through your artwork.
It doesn't take a single word. You've made that entire web of emotional connections by painting it into existence.
Hand-painted in Adobe Photoshop CC using the Wacom Intuos Pro and the Wacom Art Pen.
