Light in the Darkness

Girl in light
“When you want to make the main color pure and bright, don't just keep adding bright colors on it. Just make the colors around the spot darker and dull. It will give the scene dramatical effects.
I think the life is the same.” - Hiroko Sakai

Hiroko was on to something with this. It's difficult to notice the light when there is light everywhere. So really, the darkness in paintings and in our lives does us a favor.

But notice how, when there is darkness surrounding, the viewer's eye is drawn to the light. Now, this might be one way that life is a little different from painting. While it is easier to notice light when there is darkness, many times our minds focus on the negative.

Shadows loom in paintings, making them all the more beautiful in full view. But it isn't until you step back, that you notice the true beauty the shadows help make.

These thoughts give us lessons we can apply to our lives. The darkness can become consuming, BUT

1) If you keep your eyes looking in the right direction, they will still recognize the light.

AND

2) If you take a step back and look at the entire picture, you will realize how the darkness shaped and formed you.

Light and darkness can exist in the same painting and the same life, but it is the light that will come out on top if you let it.
