Let's Play a Game
When you practice, what do you think about it? Is it a requirement? A necessity? A chore? A drill? Does "game" ever come to mind?
For most people, the first four are probably more accurate to how we feel about practicing. It is just a necessary act to get where we can do what we actually want to do. How drab, boring, and discouraging is that?
If this is you, LISTEN UP! 👂
STOP IT!!! You are shooting yourself in the foot before you even get started.
Yes, practice should be repetitive. Practice should be consistent. Practice should be done, but that doesn't mean it has to kill the joy of painting. So, let's reframe how we think of practice.
Watch children who can do chores with a twinkle in their eye. How do they do that? Well, usually it gets turned into a game. They make it fun, like wadding up and shooting the laundry into the basket, timing how fast they can wipe off the counters, or getting points for how many things they pick up and put away.
I know, I know. We are "adults," but really, we are all kids at heart. We enjoy having fun and playing games, so why don't we use that to our advantage?
Next time you practice, set up a game! Make a points system, set a clock, or just have plain fun going wild with experimentation or painting a subject you WANT to paint.
Each game session will lead to more and more of an addictive little game you can play and will act as a reference for your growth. The next week you can aim to beat your new high score.
