Let Go and Let God
“Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.” -Andre Gide
I can't tell you how many times this has been my issue. I will beat my head against a brick wall on a painting. Then, I take a reprieve to recenter myself and get a new perspective. Depending on how much time I have, this can take hours, days, weeks, and even months on some paintings.
And voila! 🙌
It's like everything magically comes together, and I have no explanation other than it is a God thing.
It wasn't anything that I did that made it come together. In fact, when I tried doing it, what was the result? A bunch of bricks to the head! 🧱 Frustration, discontentment, self-loathing, and the list can go on.
Like with our children, eventually, we have to let go and trust that they will do the right things, make the right choices, and be who you know they are capable of being.
Art is much the same way — the more you try to control, try to intervene, and try to browbeat it into being what you want it to be, the more it will hurt you and the painting. These are often the paintings that end up being unfinished, hidden, and not discussed. They are stowed away in our closet of failures.
So instead, let the paint speak. Ask yourself, is it time to let go and let God?
