Feeling Unappreciated?

Have you ever felt unappreciated? Overwhelmed?

 

Well, I hope you can take solace in knowing this isn't just an artist's curse.

 

When there is a disconnect between the professional and the consumer on the process of producing the product, there tends to be a lack of full appreciation for what was made or done.

 

Just think of all the skilled trades and careers that we take for granted DAILY! And it's not because we are consciously wanting to take them for granted. Simply, it's because we don't think.

 

We don't think about the effort that goes into just learning how to begin the creation process. We don't think about the costs that go into getting all of the equipment and supplies together to tackle the job. We don't think about the time invested in trying to ensure the first product turns out the way it should or the time invested to be on the path toward continuous improvement.

 

So, when you feel underappreciated and overwhelmed, stop and think about who you might be taking for granted. It could be someone as close as a family member who lives with you or someone you only see when you need them in a pinch.

 

I have a feeling if you let someone else know you appreciate them, even if you don't fully understand everything they've done to get where they are today, you will feel a lot better about going back into the studio to tackle your next piece.

 

The same goes for encouraging other artists. Yes, you know the process, but you don't know all of the struggles that particular individual went through. Everyone goes through a different journey. The desired destination just happens to be the same sometimes.

 

We can use our words to tear down, or we can use them to build up. It's your decision whether you're going to be on the demolition or construction team.
