Don't Be a Critic
“Don't be an art critic, but paint, there lies salvation.” -Paul Cezanne
What good does it do to tear others down?
Let's visualize this. Pretend you are standing on the ground, and someone else is standing on a ladder. The person has the exact same strength as you. How much easier is it for you to pull him off the ladder than it is for him to pull you up on the ladder with him?
It's a pretty drastic difference in effort, right?
That's because gravity is working with you and against the person on the ladder!
Now, in this analogy for artists, our "gravity" is often our own minds. We tear ourselves down enough without anyone else helping us out, and negativity is CONTAGIOUS!
But want to know what else can be just as contagious?
POSITIVITY!
Have you ever had someone smile at you, and you couldn't help but smile back (even if you weren't in the best mood)? There is something about it that our brains are attracted to and connect.
So, instead of pulling that person down to your level and accomplishing nothing but helping out gravity, try affirmation instead.
Usually, it will backfire, and you'll end up receiving affirmation in return. And now, you are putting in the effort for you both to be on the ladder together and maybe even move up a few rungs.
