Ever get in your own head? You've thought through the possibilities — those potential implications, interpretations, and the list of what ifs could go on forever.
All of the thinking can stop you dead in your tracks and leave you doing just that and only that...thinking. But what do we paint with?
Our brain?
While, yes, our brains do help us to do those motor movements and develop skills, there is something more to painting than just a robotic input and output. I would argue that most artists paint more with their hearts than with their brains.
People will talk about someone having a "caring heart," but in my mind, it is a loving heart and a caring brain. The brain is trying to rationalize, make sense, and find a solution. The heart takes action and chooses to love whether it's the best response or not.
When you are creating, sometimes, you have to care a little less and love a little more. Quit trying to think your way through every little detail of the painting. Letting the paint speak and your heart take over can do wonders to turn a painting into a masterpiece.
