There is something about painting that is grounding. It has always been something that I could come back to as a mental reset, and I am thankful to work in a profession that provides that opportunity.
For some people, this only comes in their leisure time, and I don't know if I could continue in a career like that for any other reason than necessity. But it works for some people to keep themselves separate from their work. That may be where art is unappealing to them because it makes their job central to their being.
This means that as an artist, there has to be a love for the craft. It isn't just an escape. It is an adventure into the depths of your hopes, your dreams, and your soul. It is a self-discovery experience with each brushstroke, and it doesn't matter if it comes easily or comes through struggle.
In order to be an artist, you have to be all in, and almost certainly, your heart has to be all in to be your compass along the way.
