A Story Two-Fold

There is something about a painting that shows you something deeper about the artist. But I think there is more to be learned and to be said when you have the reference or the context. Context comes into play more for portraits of people before cameras when the model would sit for hours over the course of several sessions. Looking at the clothes, the facial expression, and the background told you more about the person's status and even the artist's relationship to that person.
Nowadays, we have the benefit of having the original reference. There is so much darkness brought to light, not only about the subject, but about the painter. You see, with each painting the story is two-fold. There are things going on in the background on both sides as the painter not only aims to capture the essence of the subject but also imbues a piece of herself.
